Last Night the Rebels went to @manhattansuperbowl and completed the next leg of the Ultimate Sportsman competing in Ten Pin Bowling and endulging into a mountain of delicious pizzas.
Alot of trash was talked mid week with not much follow up as usual. Harry won the night scoring a whopping 162 and 133 to take out the “Pin” trophy. Apparently he only ever bowled 2 or 3 times, but after 6 beers turned out hes actually played over a 100 times. Plenty of laughs were had watching Goose be Goose and with everyone putting on a few kg’s after all the pizza, carb loading for Saturdays game. Hosko is still the man to beat clinging ontop top spot on the leaderboard… for now.

The boys flexed their muscles infront of a supportive group of family and fellow Rebels teammates as they lived out their boyhood dreams. The SCG has been graced with the presence of Bradman, the Chappells and the Waugh Brothers, they can now add Lochner, Harty and Orr to that esteemed list.

A trio of Rebels Legends got the chance of a lifetime to play on our local hallowed turf the SCG yesterday. The boys flexed their muscles infront of a supportive group of family and fellow Rebels teammates as they lived out their boyhood dreams. The honours this week's @hoyts player of the week have to go to George Nittes. I defer to our Records Officer, Nic Lochner but it would be a while since a Rebel bowled 28 overs in a row. Desperate to win in the proverbial 11 point game, George willed his side on at each break and led the way, hardly losing intensity and was one of the more unlucky bowlers I've seen to only finish with 2/64. I'm sure an improv ice bath was in use at the Nittes household on Sunday morning. Treat yourself to the movies on us George, hit up KJ for your 2 tickets.

It wasn't the best weekend with only 1s doing the best with a wash out against De La Salle but even they lost out with ICC upsetting Clovelly to extend their gap to us in 4th. A big kudos to JAPO & Andy for helping out in 2s, I enjoyed the chance to run around with the guys & it was a dogged effort with only 4 bowlers at our disposal. 5s unfortunately missed a golden chance to upset Artarmon with their bowling artillery too strong. It's simple now all sides need to win every game with us now reliant on other results to make finals in other grades, but as you'll see in the teams below, we can do it given the calibre of players across the 3 grades.

Big day for for Australia Day thanks everyone for the turn out

1s kept their perfect record in 2021 with their best win of the season to date against ladder leaders and a bogey side in recent times in Botany. It was a perfect start removing their dangerous opener before we were up against it with an aggressive counter-attack that saw Botany going at about 8 an over. Wickets always change momentum and it was a great pullback by the guys, including by Robbie Botha who was on a hat-trick.

Chasing a decent total on a fast track at Heffron, it was a perfectly paced effort by the Rebels who got there with 9 balls to spare. A 87 run 2nd wicket stand and 77 run 3rd wicket stand were the highlights as Prez dropped anchor and led the way with a chanceless half-century. He was well-supported by JAPO and Tom Geyer who was playing his first game since dislocating his shoulder in Round 1 and showed what an asset he will be leading into a potential finals berth. The win sees the Rebels one win out of the top four.

2s. The first win at Alexandria Park Oval for the Rebels as a club took a lot longer than we would’ve liked but it came at a crucial time for 2nd grade who were losing touch with the top 4. Mooch Peters led the way at the top of the order, easily top scoring for the Rebels, helped by cameos by George Nittes and Asfandyar Uppal who scored 24 off 13 at number 10.

It was a nervy chase with Souths at one point 4/92 but in the end the Rebels prevailed with Archie Webb superb with 3/23 off his 7 overs in a pretty even bowling performance outside of that. Ruaan Jonker was also great in the field with 2 catches

5s. The Rebels Collapse Syndrome hit 5th grade on the weekend as the Rebels went from 2/65 to all out for 89 in 32 overs. Sully led the way with a couple of maximums after a solid start from KJ and Kev Harty who both made starts but weren’t able to go on.

Defending the small target, the boys made a great fist of it with skipper Orr miserly with the new pill, and Sully coming in late with 2 LBWs and a bowled, but helped by their opener who scored nearly half the runs, they couldn’t hold back ICC who chased down the total with 2 overs remaining.

While there were claims for Dan Fourro who won a crucial toss and then paved the way with his early departure allowing Sebastian Knox to get to work. Another one from the tennis pre-season club, Knoxy may be benefiting from some extra time at the net with an imperious display at Heffron finishing unbeaten on 132*. Again, Damien Peters was stiff playing second fiddle (82*) after doing the same to Chris Rankin only a few weeks before! It was a Rebels Rinse on the weekend, just the wrong kind…as unfortunately all sides went down against tough competition in the first red ball action in 3 weeks.

The wrap-up is below:

1s:
Against arguably the competition favourites and a settled side in De La Salle, the Rebels started well winning the toss and after an early wicket, a 71 run stand between Prez and the 1st grade skipper helped form a good launch pad for the 2nd half of the innings. In a resemblance of Week 1, overs 20-30 were again a bit dry but still it was a defendable total in windy conditions. Again, it was a solid start with the opposition 3/42 before a batting masterclass by their middle order saw them home with 5 overs to spare. It was hardly a bad performance by the 1s boys who were a bit understrength and with 5-10% improvement in all facets will be very competitive when the whips are cracking, with another big test against last year’s premiers Illawarra Catholic Club in the debut match for the Rebels on turf at Alexandria Park Oval.

2s:
It was going to be a good test against a side who played in 1st grade last year and the boys held their own in the field with Ebi Shamsi with the new rock and first year Rebel, Archie Webb head and shoulders above the rest with miserly spells producing wickets. Ebi was also active in the field with 2 catches alongside stand-in wicketkeeper & captain, Damien Peters. That was unfortunately as good as it got for the boys as the Hurstville boys ran riot with the ball bowling the Rebels out in 25 overs, including 2 run outs. Skipper Mooch scored half the runs in a defiant captain’s knock. The boys have a great opportunity to dust themselves off before a big clash against archrivals Clovelly on a batsmen’s paradise at Heffron.
5s:
The unknown quantity of 1st year side Artarmon ended up being an irrepressible force as six of their nine bowlers used took wickets. In a positive for our boys, we almost managed to bat out the overs - highlighted by Adrian (Koshie) Whittaker who made his case for a promotion from No 10.

Congratulations to Jake Embley (@j4444ke) , who on the weekend became the 75th Rebel to reach the 50th Match milestone. The Club's premier leg spinner, Jake only began bowling full-time a year ago. Since then, he's amassed 29 wickets in 29 games, at an average of 23.93 and a strike rate of 25, and a premiership to boot!

With the heavy rain on Sunday 9s got the dreaded call from Lance for rain card.
So 5s were the only team to play on Saturday. The match went down to the wire with some massive highlights from all players on the ground.
The top order did well seeing off the opening bowlers, in piticular Lochner with a handy 35. Coventry and Stamos steadied the ship putting up a great 50run partnership. Giving way for the rest of the team swing for the rafters including Navi and Orr smashing some runs.
The bowling started well, both Orr (who brought up his 100th wicket for the club) and Gerritse being unplayable. As the innings went on the tension in the air was palpable. Gypsies needing 9 runs to win got lucky with a 6 on the 2nd last bowl of the game.

The heart with which 5s played was true Rebels Cricket and will be talked about for years to come.
